A great big thanks to Amy

Just received an email and photo from Amy G.

She has completed another wonderful shawl and is working on yet another.Thank you so very much, Amy.  You and your beautiful shawls are very much appreciated.

If anyone else has photos of completed (or in progress) shawls that they would like included in this blog,just send the pic to me or to Joan and she can forward it to me for inclusion.

I know there are many more shawls that lovingly cradle someone -- and though we don't have photos of these, they are very much appreciated.  Thank each and everyone of you for all you do.

Sherman and St. Thomas More........

On November 28th we had another drop-in class  crochet class at Sherman Hospital. It was so nice to have Amy G. join us today and bring along yet another shawl she is working on.  What a joy to see the fantastic progress.

This morning, December 1st, we had our monthly Prayer Shawl Group meeting at St. Thomas More Church.  Pictured below are 5 more completed shawls --- and another was brought in after the photo was taken.  What fantastic dedication of these wonderful shawl makers, look in the upper right corner of the photo.  Only a short time post op and with splint in place, this lovely lady was there with with her knitting needles clicking sharing her love and compassion for others.  Thank you, thank you.

Great Prayer Shawl Class at Sherman today ....

What wonderful ladies to give of their time (and talent) to come and learn a new craft.
Today we had five who came to learn -- a couple had some previous experience and all of them have enough enthusiasm to carrying them thru the awkward first stages of becoming comfortable with hook and yarn in hand.  I feel confident that they all will finish their shawls and very likely continue on and make many more.  Thank you all --  (and thanks, Barb, for snapping a few photos).

Another class is scheduled for next Monday, November 28, from 2:30 to 4:30.

Prayer Shawl Ministry Group meeting at St. Thomas More
Another wonderful morning with a group of dedicated women in attendance.
What a great way to spend a few hours once a month -- in the company of friends and working on a very worthwhile project.  Today we were so pleased to have Fr. Butler join us and bless the shawls. Thank you so much, Fr. Butler -- you made our morning even more special. Following are todays photos

 All the shawls are just lovely, I was most impressed with the striped shawl (last photo above) this was knit from left overs of other shawls.  Isn't it gorgeous? Below  are  photos of a few recipients with their shawls --  the smiles say it all.

 

A Shawl Story...............

Quotes from an email received today.
A shawl was sent to Hideko in Sendai, Japan -- where the earthquake and tsunami did such horrific damage.  A friend, Lynn, in Temecula, California sent me the yarn to make a shawl.  At the time neither of us knew where the shawl would go.

".......... My family and me didn't get much direct suffer in March. But there are still too many people (including relatives and friends) who haven't got back their normal life. I am busy working to help them. But I am very well.  In these days suddenly it's become a bit cold. Your shawl is keeping me warm and I am oftenly thinking of you and Lynn. Take care of yourself. I hope you have nice days.

Also, we have been exchanging information on the Friendship Doll Exchange between Japanese and American children -- beginning in 1927.

Hideko commented on the Friendship Doll information as followe:

"It's wellknown story about this friendship dolls. It was just before the war. Lots of dolls were sent to Japan from US as a symbol of friendship then too. But we had very sad history after that between your country and mine. Isn't it amazing news we have got still those dolls remained even after such unhappy years? I wish our friendship would be forever in future."

September meeting of STM Prayer Shawl group ,,

 

Another wonderful meeting with a fantastic group of ladies.  In addition to our regulars, today we welcomed three new people to our group and loved having the little guest who came with her Mommy.  What a perfect angel the little one is.  A delight to have her with us.

 

   
     

Also there were four more gorgeous shawls added to be distributed. You can't see in the photo, but the top left shawl has wonderful tassels only on the four corners. Very nice.

Gift of a prayer shawl .....

The gift of giving and receiving.

I recently received the following email from a dear friend.

A special family member of hers has been undergoing treatment and our friend accompanies her on her trips by train to the city for treatment. Our friend had made a lovely shawl -- and, well, the note says it all.

..............We had a lot of time to talk AND she brought the blue prayer shawl I made for her - she gets so cold on the train and in cold air conditioning - she had it wrapped around her arms.  Made me feel special - as well it should the two of you for getting me started on it.  With the meaning behind it and the prayers I said for her while making it - just know the good man upstairs feels that way too..........

Thank you, N, for allowing me to share this note with the Prayer Shawl groups. I think it is good to share notes like yours -- often the maker of a shawl has no idea (and that is OK) who the shawl went to or why -- it would be hard to keep track, but when we do know, and we see how important the shawls are to the receivers and the makers,
it is good to share these thoughts.

Third Meeting at St. Thomas More

This morning was the third meeting of the Prayer Shawl Group at St. Thomas More.  There were twelve present.  A good gathering for summer vacation months.  I am amazed at the work these wonderful ladies have done.  I have posted photos of some of the beautiful shawls that have been completed.  Thank you one and all.


My apologies to Sharon Hall who left before photos were taken -- next time Sharon :-)


It was also good to hear that one of our group is working with friends from the Del Webb Subdivision to start a group there that will support Sherman Hospital.

Lattice Work Pattern Shawl

This shawl is made with regular worsted weight (4 ply) yarn.  Only about 1/2 the cost of making one with the lovely Lion Brand Homespun yarn --- this was made with Caron "by the pound"  yarn (see photo below) and used up the whole one pound of yarn for a cost of about $7.00 total.  I will try a few other yarns and patterns to try to keep the cost down.

Thursday AM -- Here's photo of newest shawl along with 3 skeins of Homespun "Ocean" yarn donated by a lovely lady from St. Thomas More.

STM Prayer Shawl Group

This morning was the first meeting of the Prayer Shawl Group at 
St. Thomas More Church.

Eleven or twelve gathered for the first time.  

I had intended to take a few photos, but we all got right down to business.

First, as a group, we recited the following prayer:

We praise you Lord for giving us these hands to create this shawl.

May it comfort the sick, the weary, and the many friends and neighbors

who need a loved one to be by their side.

May they find comfort in the work we do and in the prayers

and love we send.

Amen

Then it was time to get to work -- we all admired each others choice of yarn color --

and the knitters began knitting and the crocheters began to crochet.  
At the end of two hours 

we had all made great progress and spent two hours of friendship together.

We will continue to meet on the first Thursdays of the month at 9:00 am.

We have been gone for the last almost week so I haven't had the opportunity to add the photos I have

You all are wonderful, and these shawls are appreciated so very much by patients and family.

Wednesday night while at a meeting in Iowa,  I was sitting in the hospitality room and decided I could crochet on a shawl while talking.

The ladies saw I was cutting the fringe for the red shawl and then tying knots in each piece - my friend, Marge, asked if she could help -- soon the rest wanted to help too - and as we finished the red one I began on another (the lovely parfait yarn you sent, Lynn). 

It was learned that one of our members wasn't there because she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and so it was decided that this lovely pink parfait shawl when finished, will go to her --- we cut all the fringe strips and everyone, men included knotted at least one strip so that  everyone at the meeting added their love, thoughts and prayers to the shawl for  her.  It was so fantastic to see how the men all wanted to be sure and be a part too.   

Pictured above my friend, Marge, helping with the red fringe.  That shawl is finished now and will find it's way to Neris. (The yarn for this red shawl was donated by our own Barb) The second photo shows some of the ladies working on cutting and knotting the fringe pieces. 

These are truly international acts of love -- Paola's mother-on-law

and the group in Iowa consisted of two ladies from Canada(international) and the states of Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Colorado, Vermont, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Wisconsin,  -- and those are 

just the states I can remember.

Keep up the great work -- you all

 are so very special.
